I stopped using PSI months ago because I could not get it to work correctly. This in spite of v1.x working just fine.

I just downloaded the current version in the hopes that a resolution had been found. But it still fails. Specifically:

Issue #1: In order for PSI to connect to the internet I have to disable all certificate checks. For a program that proports to help with security this is astounding. (all on board certifs are up to date.)

Issue #2: PSI v2.x self aborts any scan I try to run. There is no error message, but perhaps the telling clue is that there are no drives detected. Under
Configuration > Settings > Drives nothing is listed. (there is one HD that contains three partitions.)

I had raised these issues when v2 was first released, and after several back and forths on this forum, and emails from tech support I was told they would check into it. Clearly the checking leaves a little to be desired.

OK, so it has been 3 biz days since my post on this thread, with no response from Secunia.

I'm not sure what that means, but I take it to mean that they agree, v2.0 is still broken.

This is a sorry state of affairs for a wonderful utility. It is sad to see that the UI improvements to v2 did not carry over to improvements in the underlying engine.

OK, so that we can all save some time here is some additional info:

Here is the last message in the thread:
http://secunia.com/community/forum/thread/show/723...

I started this thread on Jan 12, 2011. And E.Petersen was kind enough to engage the issue. Here is his response as the last message before the thread was locked:

Hi,

I removed the stop to remove "Require server verification (https:) for all sites in this zone" from the FAQ, as this step has been deprecated. Thank you for making me aware.

The reason we suggest unchecking the check for server revocation certificates is that, for some reason, some users are unable to access http://crl.thawte.com, which is required to use the PSI (SSL) unless this option is unchecked.

As for the actual issue at hand, we are still investigating what could be wrong. I wil get back too you as soon as we know something or have another suggested fix (this is what we usually do, and it usually works!).

Hope this helps.

Well, needless to say I never did hear from Mr. Petersen again, and with the latest download the problem still persists.

So to save time here is the current status:
*Win XP pro SP3 with all critical updates
*no proxy in use
*Firewall is open for both directions for all Secunia programs
*Advanced text is off for the program exe and globally
*internet settings have https://*.secunia.com as trusted
*internet settings have http://crl.thawte.com as trusted
*active scripting is enabled in internet settings
*Secunia PSI Agent is set to start as a service
*Check for server certificate revocation is UNchecked
*I can reach http://crl.thawte.com just fine
*I can reach https://psi.secunia.com just fine
*computer clock set to time-a.nist.gov, and is running on time

A couple of notes:
*Secunia update agent is nowhere to be seen
*v1.0 ran just fine
*I don't like having sever certificate revocation disabled
*This issue has gone on since v2 went gold release

So what's next??

Hi,

Try resetting all the settings of your Internet Explorer installation to their default. This removes the chance of some security software messing with obsure settings (A recurring problem).

Then try walking through FAQ item #s3 again (every step).

Hope this helps.
