Hi,

I believe I have read all of the .NET threads, have un-installed, re-installed, re-booted and have tried everything I found suggested in this forum (except for the .NET Framework Uninstall Tool) but certain updates just refuse to install. Please take a look and see what I'm missing:

As U have clearly noted this thread?

http://secunia.com/community/forum/thread/show/116...

If U really have tried everything uninstall is the only option left if U wish to secure your PC.

Thank you, Maurice.

I have tried uninstalling before and this is what transpires:

First, I removed Silverlight. OK. Successful.
Then, I uninstalled .NET Framework 4 Client Profile. Successful. Re-booted.
Secunia, after a full scan, then says only .NET 2.x remains insecure. I tried to remove it but got the message "2.0 SP2 cannot be uninstalled.." I clicked Change, hoping to at least repair it but received no "successful" message.

I then ran Windows Update (Custom) twice, with the same results:
2 High Priority Updates: KB2572067 for .NET 1.1, and KB2572073 for .NET Framework 2, SP2.
When I try to install the two of them, I receive the message "some were not installed: ..KB2572067"

Microsoft Update History: the two failed installs repeatedly are for .NET 1.1 SP1:
KB2572067
KB2416447

I get the 3 insecurities from Secunia as noted in my original post if I try installing all of the suggested Microsoft updates.

What am I doing wrong?

Thanks.

By "at the bottom of this post" do you mean the part in BOLD about downloading the Removal Tool.? If not, please quote the part you want me to focus on.

I'm sorry, I've read and re-read so many posts that my eyes are spinning.

OK. I was hoping I had missed something and wanted to check before downloading and using the Removal Tool, as the warnings had me a bit worried.

I'll report back tomorrow. Thanks.

Success! I must admit I was nervous about using the Removal Tool after reading all of the advisories but, although it took a while, I now have my system back at 100%.

Thank you Maurice. I appreciate how tedious it must be answering the same questions over and over again but I trust you get satisfaction helping so many of us too.

MS Update says I have 6 Optional Updates involving, among others, .NET Framework 4 and .NET 3.5 SP1 which I'm going to leave alone until Secunia says I need them, correct?

Best Regards from Sunny California

Pleased to hear U are all secure again from a very wet Salisbury UK.

I must admit there is a fair amount of discussion on technical Forums/blogs on the loading of .NET Framework updates.

I would personally install them one at a time going by date. That said U are using PSI correctly - if it is saying that your system is 100% then your system is secure & there is no urgency to load them.

I will lock this thread for U in a few hours time unless U post back asking for it to be left open.

This will protect your mail box from update emails from Forum "tag on" posts & spammers.

You can of course lock your own threads yourself. Just click the ACCEPT button in the post of the helper who offered U the best solution/advice to solve your problem.

One last thing: On boot up this morning, I noticed my start menu had been affected. Several programs failed to boot, including Secunia. I get this type of message:

sprtcmd.exe .NET Framework Initialization Error. Runtime error.

I haven't had a chance to try and fix it. Any thoughts?

Thanks, Maurice. Keep dry.

Likely that U have got some .NET missing, for example, have U reloaded any .NET4?

The word optional (I assume U are using Windows XP) can be misleading - many programmes now use .Net 4 & it looks like those programmes are "calling on it" to function.

It seems U are secure but not fully functional until U load all .NET on offer.

I would leave the thread open to U are fully satisfied that everything is working to your liking. I wiil not close it unless requested by U.

It took forever to load all of the "Optional Updates, " one at a time, as you suggested. So long, in fact, that my California sunshine has now turned to rain, but at least I have full functionality and a 100% score!

Thanks again for your help and patience. You can now close the thread.
