I get two error messages: Unable to locate appropriate web browser and An error occured while attempting to open the specified URL.

I have been using PSI for years and have never had a problem with a manual update before. Any help is appreicated!

Path: C:\Windows\SysWOW64\msxml4.dll

If you cannot find the answer to my question or your version is not 4.30.2114.0 this should fix it:

UPDATING MSXML 4.0

MSXML4 was shipped as an independent, downloadable SDK targeted at Independent Software Vendors and third parties. It is an upgrade for but not a replacement to MSXML3 as version 3 still provides legacy features. Versions 6,4 and 3 may be run concurrently.

MSXML 4.0 SP3 is the most recent version released in March 2009. SP2 support expired in April 2010.

The download link (clearly marked MSXML.MSI - 2.0 MB) is here:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/en/details.aspx...

Please note this SP was released before Windows 7 was produced therefore there is no mention of compatibility - it works flawlessly with Windows 7 on both 32 & 64 Bit systems

Now run Windows Update - there are some additional patches for SP3.

Once installed run a full PSI scan & PSI will pick it up as secure with version 4.30.2114.0

Update 1 17:34 22/08/2012

That did the trick, but I'm wondering about the error messages. Now it has changed to:

An error occured while opening the link in your defaul browser. Would you like to use Internet Explorer?

That's the only browser I have installed and just to be sure I checked internet tools and it is checked as "notify me if IE is not default browser".

Also, I'm not getting email notifications to my posts, they are not going into junk, spam or trash and I have subscribe box checked. Any clues?

Pleased MSXML 4 is fixed.

Is there a yes answer to this? If so click it to see what happens.

An error occurred while opening the link in your default browser. Would you like to use Internet Explorer?

Also, I'm not getting email notifications to my posts, they are not going into junk, spam or trash and I have subscribe box checked. Any clues?

No - happening to me to. I will email support & report it.

yes, there is a "yes" to click for IE explorer, I'm just wondering why it's not finding IE as my default browser.

PSI tells me I need 3 updates to XML Core Services.
I click Update and am sent to Windows update and am told that Windows are up to date and there are no updates available.

There's no URL that comes up, it just tells me it can't find my browser. It does this too when I click on the Secunia Community link for the forum at the bottom of the app.

I assume U are using PSI version 3 which I have just tested & that aspect appears to work OK.

Open IE>Tools>Internet Options>Advanced - now click Restore Advanced Setting.

If that does not solve it have U checked the IE setting required by PSI here?

http://secunia.com/vulnerability_scanning/personal...

If still no joy do you know how to check if IE is correctly set up in the Registry?

If not I need to know the OS U are using & whether it is a 64 or 32Bit system then I can give precise instructions where to look.

I had problem which I recounted in forum last night. My browser is Firefox. This morning I switched to Internet Explorer, checked for updates and Windows Update updated MSMXL and PSI is now green which makes me happy!

I'm getting email notifications again.

It still is not recognizing my browser and I'm not comfortable altering registry. I tried uninstalling/reinstalling PSI, which sometimes helps, but it didn't in this case.

So, without altering registry, if a manual update is required on a program and I can't click on it to go to the website (or access the forum from the app) what are my other choices?

Until you find the cause of the browser oddity you can do this:

Drag the Forum URL to the taskbar - on any future use of the Forum just click the new taskbar icon to access the Forum direct.

For any manual updates just note the programme & install it direct from the vendor.

Have you considered dropping back to PSI version 2 to see if that improves things? Are you aware version 3 is not an upgrade from version 2 - it mainly caters for Beginner Class users.

If you want to try that approach the links are below my Signature Block.

If U are going back I recommend version 2.0.0.3003 - as my links suggest this version gives much more details in the Secure Browsing page.

I uninstalled 3, deleted all files associated with it, ran CCleaner and also fixed the Registry, restarted and installed v2. I clicked on the Community Forum link in the app and I got the same errors--can't find browser, problem with URL. So,this tells me it's not a Secunia problem. But, when the program first starts it verifies internet connection without a problem. I'm stumped!

Worth having a LOOK in the Registry - it is very easy & would eliminate another possible cause.

If U want to try, just take your time & follow this script.

1. Opening REGEDIT

Click Start>type regedit in the search box>REGEDIT.EXE will appear at the top of the list>click it>from the prompt allow the programme to run>U are now in the Registry.

2. Finding the correct key to check

a. Look in the LEFT PANE & at the top U will see HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT. To the left of that key is an arrow. Click it to reveal a long list of Gobbledygook.
b. Scroll down that list to the entry http Click the arrow to the left and look for SHELL click the arrow to the left of Shell and look for OPEN click the arrow to the left of Open and it will reveal COMMAND

3. Checking the key.

a. Double click on the word COMMAND. The word COMMAND should be highlighted blue.
b. Now look in the RIGHT HAND PANE and U will see an entry starting with an ICON next to the word (default). DOUBLE click on the word (default).
c. A box will appear. U will see an entry called VALUE DATA which will have data in it highlighted in blue.
d. That data should be EXACTLY as written below.

"C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\IEXPLORE.EXE" -nohome

A screen shot is here for reference:

https://akkkug.bay.livefilestore.com/y1pmbtxeFNnl-...

Now EXIT the registry by click the RED BOX with a X at the top RIGHT corner.

Is that key correct?

What error? MSXML 4 is solved on this thread - we are dealing with a Internet Explorer error message.

Better U created your own thread & give more details. I suspect U are commenting on MSXML SP 3 which is not part of Windows Update so U will get no response from a scan.

Well, that could be my problem because there is no symbol next to http>shell and in the right window pane the only entry is (Default). Looks like I'm missing something.

Can U take a screenshot of what U have found so that it looks something like mine?

POSTING A SCREEN SHOT TO THE FORUM

To post a screen shot to the Forum U need to:

1. Capture the image by using a programme such as:
a. Microsoft Paint - details here if unsure how it is done.
http://www.wikihow.com/Take-a-Screenshot-in-Micros...
b. Microsoft One Note
c. Microsoft Snippet (Windows 7 & Vista)
d. Any third party equivalent programme.

2. Save the image to an online repository such as Microsoft Skydrive or here: http://www.picamatic.com/

3. Post the hyperlink to the stored online image to the Forum. Use CTRL+C to copy & CTRL+V to post to the Forum.

I have managed to reproduce your error & can confirm it is caused by the missing registry entries.

On my PC there was a simple solution.

Open your browser until U can see the error message - the message I get is

Internet Explorer is not currently your default browser. Would you like to make it your default browser?

There is a box below with a check box stating

Always perform this check when starting Internet Explorer

That box must have a tick (check mark) in it then press yes.

Now open the Registry again & navigate back to where you took the screen shot.

Has that created the following new entries UNDER the OPEN folder

A folder called COMMAND

Another folder called DDEEXEC

Click on the + sign to the left of DDEEXEC - are there two sub folders named Application & Topic?

Hopefully it will look like this:

Not surprised - I am a real dozy devil!

Open Regedit & navigate back to SHELL

1. Right click on SHELL

2. Select NEW then select KEY - a box will appear named NEW KEY#1 highlighted in blue - OVER TYPE that box and name it Open

3. Now do the sequence of events given in my last post.

I created "Open" under shell but nothing appears after it or in the right pane. I've edited my registry before with string and binary values but I'm not sure how to proceed. I looked over your previous post but I'm not really sure what to do next.

It should now look like this when U click on open:

https://akkkug.bay.livefilestore.com/y1pLovHXYxW4z...

If that is the case leave the Registry & repeat this action:

Open your browser until U can see the error message

"Internet Explorer is not currently your default browser. Would you like to make it your default browser?"

There is a box below with a check box stating

"Always perform this check when starting Internet Explorer"

That box must have a tick (check mark) in it then press yes.

That should now auto populate the missing keys & this is what should now be in the Registry:

https://akkkug.bay.livefilestore.com/y1pOMFY2JS5ur...

Okay, how do I get my browser to ask me this? If I uncheck the box and open IE it doesn't ask me.

Also I don't have 'defaulticon' listed. Is this a big deal?

Here's what I did to be able to click the forum link in the Secuia app:

Downloaded Opera browser and let it be the default browser.
Clicked on IE icon on taskbar and the message came up, "IE is not your default, would you like it to be? I said yes.

However, when I go back to Secunia app and click on forum link it opens in Opera. I don't want to use Opera, I don't like it! And I looked in Prefs to deselect it as default but I can't find it.

Here's what my registry looks like:

So, can I just right-click, select Modify and change opera\opera.exe to IE\IE.exe?

Yes - just copy this into the box

"C:\Program Files (x86)\Internet Explorer\IEXPLORE.EXE" -nohome

Woo-Hoo, it's fixed!!!

One thing, I didn't add -nohome at the end, do I need to do that and why?

Also, why did all this necessary stuff disappear from my registry?

I know, I ask a lot of questions....

The correct string in there must be:

"C:\Program Files (x86)\Internet Explorer\IEXPLORE.EXE" -nohome

Surprised it works fully without that full string.

EDIT: Do U use a registry cleaner?

Are U using PSI version 3?

Do I remove the "%1" at the end of the string and replace it with -nohome?

U must copy & paste this EXACTLY into that box which must be the only string

"C:\Program Files (x86)\Internet Explorer\IEXPLORE.EXE" -nohome

Looks like this if correctly set up

Got it! Thank you for all your help, what started out as a Secunia/Windows/MS/who knows problem ended as a "my computer" problem and I can't tell you how much your 'Above and Beyond' service meant to me when you hung in there until it was fixed. You're one in a kind, I'm sure. Allow me a parting thought, will you marry me?

Pleased to see you are all fixed up & happy with the result. Not sure the marrying bit is a good idea - my age being at three score years & ten I am a bit too old me thinks!!

I will lock this thread for U sometime tomorrow unless U post back asking for it to be left open.

This will protect your mail box from possible update emails from any more "tag on" posts

You can of course lock threads U have created. Just click the ACCEPT button in the post of the helper who offered U the best solution/advice to solve your problem.

Secunia Support can always reopen threads by applying by email to: support@secunia.com

I downloaded the latest version of MSXML and now after I run a scan I am getting 3 messages each telling me to update the program and as I click on each item it sends me Windows Upate and in each case Windows Update tells me I am up to date. So what do I do next?

You're not too old, but I asked my husband if I could marry you and he said no. I guess you'll just have to settle for a heartfelt thank you for all your help. I truly appreciate it! You may close the thread.
