Information:
Windows 7 Professional "32 bit" running on Dell XPS 410.

I have been using PSI since Woody Leonard first discussed its existance many years ago. I was using v3.0.0.6001 and was having many issues with it hanging on startup. I have reviewed all of the posts related to this type of issue and have set my permissions accordingly.

I noted that the Secunia Update Agent was set to "Automatic" but was not started. In attempting to start the service, it would shut down immediately. I uninstalled PSI with Revo Uninstaller and cleaned any traces of Secunis PSI in my programs folder as well as in my registry to include running a registry cleaner.

I have attempted to reinstalled version three as well as version two and in either case I don't see the Secunia Update Agent installed in the services listing. I have even installed PSI in the safe mode so I was sure not to have issues with other programs inhibiting the complete installation.

I am starting to really get frustrated with this. I don't seem to be able to get the installation as it should. Can anyone please give me some advice or comment on my situation.

To update my previous post. I have successfully installed version 2 and the Update Agent is running. I was unable to achieve this with version 3.

One additional question with regards to automatic updating. Is it necessary to enable Microsoft's update to download and install (recommended)? I prefer to have Microsoft update advise me and I'll download and install at a time of my choosing.

I would like to use version 3 so since I have had increasing difficulty on it running with all the services started, I still welcome some help.

Mike,
Secunia will not update anything Microsoft so what settings you have for PSI only applies to all your other applications.

My settings are here & PSI does not get involved:

Thank you for the information on Microsoft update. I have a dual boot system (desktop) with XPSP3 on one drive and Windows 7 on the second. I have reverted back to version 2 on both drives as well as my laptop which also runs XPSP3. Everything seems to be installed and working as it should.

It only creates a problem when trying to install and run version 3. The Secunia agent service installs and runs but It doesn't appear that the Update service installs and starts.

My original reason for looking into versions 3 problems because of the hangs and slow running. I see other recent threads with regards to the same type of issues with version 3.

Mike,
Agreed. There is something not quite right with version 3. I am previewing xSI which is totally dependant on it.

My first feedback report here does cover some V3 points which Secunia have acknowledged.

Hope this helps.

Maurice,

Congratulations as to the accuracy and findings with regards to PSI. I was beginning to wonder if I had problems with my system. The fact that it performs the same on both my XPSP3 as well as the Windows 7 Pro lead me to believe also that PSI version 3 had some serious issues.

I have several friends who rely on me for maintaining their systems. I always like to make sure they are running the latest versions but it appears that in this case, that may not be the best solution.

In which case you will be very interested in xSI when it is out of preview. You will be able to monitor their computers from your PC.
