I really like that I can download PSI, so I put it on multiple computers. However, when opening from my system tray, it takes about 5-10 minutes to load, 10 minutes to scan, and then it tells me to contact support for seemingly easy updates like Java and Flash. Even though the manual update is not recommended, I prefer this over waiting for a long time for the program to update in PSI only to be told at the end I need to contact support and do it myself.

Are these problems designed to get me to upgrade to a paid version? I would be hesitant to do so based on the performance of the free version. Thanks.

Only Secunia are recommending using their SPS auto updating. As you suggest it is a great deal quicker doing it yourself manually.

For the result of any manual update a full PSI rescan is normally required to show the updated result.

EDIT: There is no paid version for home users on offer. PSI 3 is slow but I have not encountered delays as long as you have experienced.
