Hi,
I have PSI 3.0 and this morning PSI detects MS word 2010 as outdated. First I checked with Windows Updater to see if there were any updates but this didn't reveal any. I then proceeded to click "Click to Update" in the Programs that need updating. This just started the Windows Updater again. Which once again confirmed that there are no updates.
I have also run "Belarc Advisor" and that also says that my computer is up to date.

I'm running Windows 7, MS Office Pro Plus 2010 version 14.0.4734.1000 (32bit)

The path is C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Office\Office14

Could I suggest that PSI, in a future update, says which version is (or supposed to be) available for programs.

I do not think your copy of Word is up to date.

My 2010 Office Word (32 Bit) is at version 14.0.6129.5000.

Have you tried the programme update link which should also confirm what version is actually installed?

Open Word>File>Help

I believe your version of Office is only available via volume licencing. Could that be the problem?

Hi Maurice,

That could be the problem even if it seems strange to me. The company I work for buys a certain number of serial numbers to put on to the machines at work and some others to those who actually do work from home (like me). I could name people who pretend to but that's another story. Luckily my bosses know who work and those who don't!! ;-)

However I find it strange that there would be one update for one version but no update for another. I didn't know that there was this "discrimination" with MS products!

How can I check if it's a volume licence?

Thanks.

Same place Open Word>File help - It should tell you the installation type & whether it is activated.

The original installation DVD with the Activation code should also help.

If you have not got the disk I would ask your boss whether your version is correctly & currently licenced.

Microsoft do protect their programmes from piracy & unless registered correctly this can cause issues - updates being one of them.

I think this is a false positive. I am getting the same warning. I went out and did a Microsoft update which says I am up to date. I then went and tracked down the KB that fixes what it says is missing.

http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/security/bullet... which led me to http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.as... Even after installing the fix by hand, rebooting and running another scan, PSI is still saying that I am insecure.

Can anyone at Secunia please confirm that this is a false positive?

Thank you,

Dalobo

Hi Maurice,

The Office Products are activated properly and updates are updated. I have contacted somebody at work about this and there are no problems with the licence.

I've seen that somebody else is having the same problem as well.

I have downloaded both the 32bit and 64nit versions but when I run them I obtain a message saying that I do not have any products that require this update!!

Something is not quite right here I think.

E.Jeppesen,

Your link is the same think I downloaded and reinstalled. Even after a reboot, PSI still says it is out of date. This is a vuln from 10-2012 and would have been picked up long ago if I were really out of date.

@Dalobo

It is not a false positive - as you can see in my post above my 2010 copy is at version 14.0.6129.5000.

Have you installed the update as advised by the Secunia Official? If so you should also run a manual Windows update scan after a reboot to see if any more hot fixes are available.

I have downloaded again both versions of the update but I obtain the following error when trying to run them:

Impossible to find the expected version of the product

Something is not quite right here.

As somebody else has this problem as well maybe it's not me.

I have installed the patch per Secunia, I have rebooted. I have done a full system scan. Microsoft update says I am good to go. PSI says I am not.

My point here is that the patch is from last October. Why is PSI only NOW picking up that it is out of date? It would have picked this up in October of 2012. There has to be some weirdness going on here.

I have to agree with Dalobo on this. This would have shown up about 5 months ago not now.

I am showing 14.0.6123.5005 <-- Interesting. This is after a manual patch.

I have verified that the KB2553488 64bit edition patch is installed by looking at installed updates.

It took a few tries, but Microsoft update finally said I needed some updates. I am not sure of why it said no updates were needed on my first few tries, and then suddenly that updates were needed. I am installing them now. I will reboot and let you know what I find.

I still find it very odd that a) MS said I was up to date, b) PSI only now thinks I am vulnerable and C) Even after the patch it said I was missing was installed, it still said I was unpatched.

Hi Dalobo,

Did you get the manual downloads from the links provided by E.Jeppesen?

I tried them but when I ran those, both for the 32 bit and 64bit, I got that there were no products on my computer that required this update!!

May I ask if you had this same message? How did you update?

Thanks

I am not sure why the built in update kept saying I was up to date, but was not. I had to manually try several times before it finally said "Oh you have updates!" What is odd is that I had quite a few updates to download and install. (PSI is now green). What I find disturbing is that PSI did not tell me I was out of date for five months. Had I known sooner, I would have investigated then, not now.

@Maurice

Any idea why this only now said I was out of date?

@English68

You may have to run the Microsoft update a few times. If that does not work, try fixing Windows update.

Try this frist: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/971058

You can also try this one:
http://support.microsoft.com/mats/windows_update/

If that does not work, call MS. It is my understanding that MS helps fix update issues for free. I would verify that it is free, as I am not 100% sure it is free.

Good luck,

Coder68

The short answer is no. If you really think it is Secunia in error I would email them & try to get an explanation. support@secunia.com

Could it be that your Windows Update was not functioning correctly? I note you have advised to try that which is always a good idea & you have found numerous updates.

That said, pleased to see you are all fixed up.

@English68 - will be interested to know how you are getting on. Testing Windows Update via the Action Centre is a good idea from @Dalobo.

I have tried to update many times but no good.
I have also downloaded both "FixIt" programs from the links by Diabolo (thank you) but once again nothing.

I'm going to restart the computer and try again.

No, it is still showing up as outdated. My score is currently 99%.

I have downloaded the programs from the links, as I said a post or two ago, but nothing.

Just checked Windows Updater and that still says that my Computer is up to date. Also so does the ASUS updater as well!!

I'm just wondering if I should just exclude Word for now.

Just one thing, could you check to see if you have any updates specific to "Word"? I have FOUR "Office" updates (13 March 13) but nothing for word

Thanks for the help so far.

I have searched back as far as April 2012 for you. There are two updates that clearly state for Word.

KB2553488 dated 9th October 2012.

KB2760410 dated 11 December 2012 (this is the one the Secunia Official points to).

You can ignore it but not really a good idea if it has known vulnerabilities. Have you crossed checked with the version number your boss has for comparison of the same licence?

Hi Maurice,

Thanks for that. I can confirm that I do NOT have either of these updates on my computer.
I'm going to download them myself and run them.

In the meantime I have contacted my boss, who is now getting a little alarmed about this, asking him to check if these updates are on any computer at work.

I will let you know what my boss says.

Thanks again.

Thanks. From what I have read for just one update you need to have Office SP1 installed.

I have checked my computer for this via the KB number but can't find it at all.
Now I'm downloading it and see if it will solve the problem.

I have tried the 32 bit version but it said that it could find the expected program. Even if from the HELP menu it says 32 bit.

I'm now downloading the 64bit, like my computer!!

Hope this one works!!

@Maurice
My boss called and is now a little worried. HE has checked 6 laptops and all are missing these updates!!

UPDATE:
32bit version gives this error
The expected version of the product was not found on the system.

64bit version gives this error
There are no products affected by this package installed on this system.

And now?

Just a quick update.

Firstly sorry for not replying sooner but with the holidays etc...oh well I'm here now.....I can hear somebody saying "OH NO!!!!"

Anyway, Word is now showing as updated.

The version is 14.0.473.1000

I know that there is a later version as Maurice has 14.0.6129.5000.

I take it that your PC nor any of those that are registered under the Volume Licence(VL) have SP 1 installed?

In that case I am not sure why Secunia are now showing it as patched. Although the SP was a roll up fix some newer updates are reliant on it being installed.

Entirely a matter for you but I would want some confirmation from Secunia &, if necessary, Microsoft that everything is in order.

To the best of my knowledge Microsoft Word is universal however it is bundled in the various packages that are sold.

I would certain email Secunia Support & ask them to look at this thread. In addition I would ask them:

a. Have they altered their database in the last few days that triggered your vulnerability status to change.

b. If so why. This is key because as it stands it looks like a false positive to me & your PC's could still be vulnerable. Only they can confirm that.

c. Why is Word showing as patched on two different versions? There has been numerous security patches from Microsoft since SP1 was released. Example: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-gb/security/bullet...

They should have the answer because Microsoft Office in all its flavours should be known by them & reported on particularly as it is used extensively by commerce.

Entirely up to you but Secunia make no secret of the fact that vulnerability checking has its difficulties & I believe you have found an oddity on them reporting correctly.

Contact address if required: support@secunia.com

Hope this helps.

After looking into this issue it turns out that we have in fact been modifying the version rule for Microsoft Word 2010. More precisely, the version rule has been completely disabled. The reason is that it should not be needed and that having version rules for programs that are already covered by Microsoft Update appear in rare cases to cause detection issues.

From a user perspective this change to our version rules should normally not make any noticeable difference but it should eliminate/reduce the cases where the scan result from the PSI contradicts those provided by Microsoft Update.

I do not understand the rationale behind the decision to opt out of notifying users of vulnerabilities in Word. If Secunia have opted out of Word why not opt out of ALL the programmes that are covered by Microsoft Update?

Such a decision would be a backward step because all vendors, including Secunia, need some kind of external checks & balances to ensure best possible advice to the end user.

I do not believe deleting a detection rule has solved this problem.

What is Secunia Research telling us?

a. In this instance that the user of Microsoft Office Pro Plus 2010 version 14.0.4734.1000 does not require SP1 & subsequent updates to be installed to be secure? I would argue that this is incorrect until such time as an authoritative document stating that fact is produced. Secunia Research should know - surely it is their "bread & butter" to investigate inconsistencies & notify both paying customers & end users that something is amiss or otherwise.

b. Windows Update has its problems & being totally reliant on it set to automatic is foolhardy. If,for example, BITS is turned off in Services or if the PC time & date are wrong it does not work leaving the user with a false sense of security unless fully covered by companies like Secunia indicating there is a possible problem requiring investigation particularly after Patch Tuesday.

It is already possible for PSI users to ignore all their vulnerable programmes but show a 100% security score to the World via their Forum profile now it looks like some programmes are being deleted/tinkered with from/on the Secunia database which enhances the idea of "if it is too difficult bury your head in the sand" & ignore it.

I sincerely hope I am terribly wrong on my assessment because,if not, that makes PSI/Secunia less than useless for reliable security advice.

Microsoft Word has the correct meta data for it to be tracked by PSI. It should be reinstated & inconsistencies should be investigated like any other programme.

I may have accidentally left out an important detail in my last post in this thread. For the vast majority of Microsoft programs the PSI has always relied on Microsoft Update for its scanning. This has been part on the functionality of the PSI since the very beginning. For various reasons however there have been exceptions in our database where we have previously created versions rules for specific programs although they were already covered by Microsoft Update. Over the years we have strived to delete these version rules but have hesitated in some cases where they are needed or simply work as intended without causing any issues. Recently, the version rule still in our system for Microsoft Word 2010 has caused a few issues and has been deleted, just like the version rules for most other Microsoft products in our database.

So I would like to stress that this is not a change in our policy, but a situation related specifically to Microsoft Word 2010, and possibly a few other Microsoft programs if over time we come across any similar issues.

Additionally, we are currently investigating a few recent issues related to our handling of Microsoft updates, to make sure our procedures are functioning correctly. I will update this thread if needed.

While this may not invalidate the critic set forth by Maurice Joyce it should at least clarify some parts of the issue.
