Hello,

I didn't find anything with the search function and with google, so I decided to join the forum and create my first question ;-)

My Secunia PSI installation keeps a red icon and tells me, that I have to install Microsoft Update. When I push the button the IE pops up with the site "https://www.update.microsoft.com/microsoftupdate/v...", but nothing is displayed in the IE.
Since I normally use Firefox I don't have an idea of how to tell the IE to download this Windows Update for me, so PSI stays red.

Anyone a suggestion what I may do?

Greetings
SamHotte

Sam,
Have you tried to update your OS using Windows Update to see if it is working?

Hi,

the OS's update function is automatically working. OS is Windows 7 x64.

Greetings,

Sam,
If PSI is correct in finding a Microsoft vulnerability then something may be wrong with the auto update feature in Windows.

Did you try a manually scan? Right click on the Action Centre in the Tasktray>Open Windows Update>select Check for Updates from the options presented.

Hi,

manual scan says "everything is up to date" ... still in the IE there's only a blank window.

Sam,
The important information from the actions you have carried out is that Secunia PSI states that Windows is insecure & Microsoft state it is not.

What I would do is:

Reboot then run a full PSI scan - has that cleared the vulnerability report?

If not cleared does PSI give any information as to which patch is missing?

Maurice,

Secunia says "Microsoft Update is not installed" at startup, then when I do a full scan, it says "System Score 100%, all programs are up to date" (in german, I translated by myself ;)

Hi Maurice,

what I'm trying to say is that my PSI icon in the tray stays red after booting (although the mouseover says "all your programs are up-to-date"), and when I open PSI by double-clicking it, there is a message saying "Microsoft Update is not installed".
Directly under that message there is a button "Install microsoft update", which leads to the link in the original post, but: this link will open in the internet explorer only, and although the ie seems to do something, the client window remains completely blank. My IE Version is 10.0.9200.16576, if that helps.

Therefore I can't download "Microsoft Update", so my PSI tray icon will stay red. Interistingly it gets green when I perform a manual system scan. Next boot it's red again.

Hi,

I tried to fix the Problem the way you told me, but it did not change anything. To me it looks like if PSI cannot remember, what it did the last time.

[edit]
Wait a minute ... now I scanned manually and rebooted and the tray icon is green. I'll reboot some more times and perhaps the problem is solved ;)
[/edit]

[edit2]
Second reboot, icon is red again ... :(

Good question, it doesn't say - and unlike other programs, it doesn't have a menu bar with "help -- about" item. And since I didn't keep the installer, I can only guess. Should be something 3.xxx 8-]

[edit]
just downloaded the actual version. let's see what happens ...
by the way: shouldn't it update itself?

Sam,
It does not update itself - Secunia are looking at ways to include an update notification.

I would try a reinstall from here:
https://secunia.com/products/consumer/PSI/sys_req/

You will see the Change Log on the left of the page.

Just run the installer - it will auto uninstall the old before the new installation.

Maurice,

thank you for your patience and help - reinstalling PSI did the job!

I didn't think of the possibility that a program designed to observe updates is by itself not capable of updating ... how should one know that?

Again, many thanks!

Greetings,
Sam

Sam,
Pleased you are all fixed up. Updating & more importantly the notification of when Secunia update PSI has been subject to much discussion on the Forum. Hopefully they will include one shortly.

If you ever need to know the version you are using right click on the PSI icon in the Tasktray>about
