Are you still using your Vista PC? Which version of PSI are you using?

Hi Maurice,
Yep still with Vista - PSI version 3.0.0.9016
Just re-installed but the problem remains

Don't know that this is relevant but everything was working ok earlier. Icon was red but needed a big Windows update. After that the grey icon appeared.

Your not the first to post an issue like this including the fact the it occurred after Windows Update.

Is there anything in the PSI log file that gives a clue?

What I suggest you do is as follows:

Open Windows Explorer & navigate to C:\Program Files>Secunia>PSI

You should now see this in the right hand pane. Delete the two files as indicated then run PSI - it will create a clean log file.

OK - try a reinstall of version 3 using this link:

https://secunia.com/PSISetup.exe

Just activate the install - it will auto uninstall the old & install a fresh copy.

Does that get it going?

'fraid not. I've been told that there could be conflict with Avast but I've been using both for years without any problems. Also been told there could be infection.

@pcorot. I have no problems with PSI 3.0.0.9016 running on three Windows 7 Home Premium and one Windows 7 Pro after installing the Windowa updates tuesday evening. I several times ran manual scans on all machines, nothing wrong. Hope somebody can help you with this problem.

I am running v. 2.0.0.0.4003 on an XP machine and am having the same problem. Secunia just sits there checking for an Internet connection, but never completing its load. The icon turned bright tred yesterday.
I have reinstalled (with uninstall). Still the same problem.

There are a couple of other threads running on a similar theme. Not sure it is Secunia. I have just downloaded & tested both PSI version 2.0.0.4003 & 3.0.0.9016 & all appears in order & running very fast. The logs can be seen here.

https://1ncuig-ch3302.files.1drv.com/y2pSsHl9OVHPX...

https://1ncuig-ch3302.files.1drv.com/y2pL_NWM_JbWF...

Might be worth rechecking all the PC settings are as per the FAQ.

If it still does not work you could always submit your log file to Support at support@secunia.com

hello,
the problem is that ISPs can connect to the internet.
Each time you start the computer, the following message appears:
"Please verify that your internet connection is working properly"
Now it works properly!
kind regards

Thank you - I cannot see their reply to you on the log details. Have they replied?

You also state this Now it works properly! are you referring to your internet connection or is PSI now OK?

From the log it looks like a security setting is incorrect on your PC which returns this error:

1351 0x00000547, Indicates a Windows NT Server could not be contacted or that objects within the domain are protected such that necessary information could not be retrieved.

To be honest I do not really understand the sequence of events with your log if you are using Windows 7 SP1 with PSI 3.0.0.9016. Is it a clean log version & is it complete or an extract?

I cannot see their reply to you on the log details. Have they replied?

1) I sent the file to Secunia support, but they have not yet responded

You also state this Now it works properly! are you referring to your internet connection or is PSI now OK?
2) I talk about my internet connection. all programs connect without problem, except PSI

Is it a clean log version & is it complete or an extract?
3) I use Windows 7 SP1 64-bits
This is not an extract, but the full log.
Note: I have uninstalled and reinstalled PSI 3 yesterday and this log was created during installation.
Since then, nothing is written in, despite PSI installed

Thank you for your help

Thank you - now I understand - it is the installation log. I have just installed PSI & crossed referenced your log file with mine. The result is here:

https://1ncuig-ch3302.files.1drv.com/y2p2zsvLIuz_X...

**** Click CTRL + mouse scroll if you want to make screen shot larger/smaller

The interesting points are:

1. Our logs appear to match EXACTLY.
2. As seen, my PSI works normally despite the same "error" message as you.

I would try a reinstall using the green download link here:

https://secunia.com/products/consumer/PSI/sys_req/

Once you click the link let it run - it will auto uninstall the current installation & then install a new copy.

Hopefully that will work.

If not I would double check all the Windows 7 settings are correct as per the FAQ in particular these:

http://secunia.com/vulnerability_scanning/personal...

& then check there has been no alterations to your Firewall etc. that could prevent a connection.

There are no other tests I can complete to try & help further so I will uninstall PSI because I do not run it on this PC.

Hopefully Secunia will respond if you cannot get it running but it does not look like a Secunia problem more a setting with your PC.

As I said in a previous post, I submitted my log last Friday. I have received no reply and the situation remains the same. The icon is still grey and Secunia will not load. If I hear nothing in the next 24 hours I will replace Secunia with File Hippo Update Manager. I am reluctant to do this as I have used Secunia for many years but to have it installed at present is serving no purpose..

Secunia only "work" a 40 hour week which does not include weekends. Hopefully they will respond but their lack of communication skills (and interest in recent times) are legendary.

Filehippo is a scraper undater site with limited programmes rather than a vulnerability checker. If you do decide to move on I would give Heimdal a try. The link is here:

https://heimdalsecurity.com/en/

Whether you use the free or Pro version you will find a warm welcome & a support function that works. I was given a free Pro licence to test it from a "lay mans" point of view. I have yet to submit my findings to Heimdal but overall I consider it better than Secunia for many reasons not least THEIR EXCELLENT support & ability to discuss improvements to the programme.

Maurice, Thank you for your honest and helpful advice. I will hang on a bit longer to wait for a reply.

Your submission has got nothing to do with this thread. My suggestion was aimed at @detsi the originator of this thread and NO ONE else.Who stated anything about a Forum?

Contact Heimdal Support if you want answers on how it works.

I note your other thread - expecting an answer from Secunia? Dream on!!

@TiredofThis

Please be aware the PSI version 2 behaves differently to version 3 hence my caveat on the screen shot to @pcorot.

For example, if you do not activate the automatic update option during the install sequence then the Secunia Update Agent will not populate in Windows Services.

I still have version 2.0.0.4003 loaded on this PC. The Secunia Update Agent is not present in Services but the programme loads & performs as it should.

I note you too have emailed your log to support - let us hope they respond.

I am in the same boat as all these users. After the mSoft update, my PSI version aborted while obtaining definitions. Checked the updates, had a fail on KB2952664. Checked the files in the update, change4d to the updated versions. Uninstalled update, reacquired from mSoft updates. Found version 3 of PSI, installed that as admin. Got the same messages, check your internet connection. Followed all advise in this thread: service running, internet options all good, even made a special firewall rule for PSI. Program loads, tells me I need a scan, run scan and it just sits. No bar loading, no disk activity. Niente. Secunia PSI is now useless and non functional. Any cure?

I am not sure your problem is the same. The originator indicates that his PSI will not load.

You are stating yours loads but will not scan. In settings what drives is PSI attempting to scan? Are they populated like this?

Thanks for giving a tip for Heimdal security. I looked at their website and noticed that they provide silent patches for programs. Is it possible to switch that off and just get warnings and patch manually? I always prefer that method so that I can control the process including possible errors.

Thanks in advance for your reply.

Yes an option exists which I use. I,like you,do not allow third parties to update anything on my PC's.

You may also wish to look at Qualy's - they are very big hitters in the security sector https://www.qualys.com/ It is cloud based & the link is here if you have not tried it.

https://browsercheck.qualys.com/

To get the best options you must install the Plug In.

I have also noted your submission on another thread. Have you checked the Unique USER ID string in the Registry?

Unless that is established correctly PSI will not run.

It is located at HKEY_CURRENT_USER>Software>Secunia>PSI

The User ID should be 50 random letters/numbers long.

Hi Maurice, I still await some response from the Support Team after submitting my log file last Friday so I have decided to take the plunge and replace Secunia with Heimdal. It looks very neat and tidy and will, hopefully, be more trouble free than Secunia. I suspect your comments regarding Secunia Support were spot on. I have no idea how users would resolve their problems if you were not available. I will keep an eye on this forum to see if any other contributors receive a reply but somehow I doubt that they will. I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for all your help in the past. Keep up the good work.

Sadly Secunia are no-longer interested in anything other than grabbing money via CSI.

You may also wish to look at Qualy's - that covers almost all a home user wants to stay secure.

Sorry my attempts to help you did not work.

I have also sent my logs, new and old, to Secunia support.

After following all the suggestions here, the tray icon is still bright red, and when I click on it the program never loads past the first dot.

Her's some of the PSI.log

I got it to work. After trying all of the above methods, and yes, Maurice, I have both drives I want scanned checked, it occurred to me that the program was not seeing an open and functional network connection. The Secunia PSI agent service was running. So I stopped it and changed the service login from the local service to a login with my user name. The advanced options on the service login tab show how to do it. Started up the service again, The icon is red and showed one program had to be updated. Still very slow to open. Finally the need a scan screen showed up and ran the scan. The green bar finally showed up and the scan completed.
If anyone is more articulate in explaining how to do this on a service, please jump in.

ElGato, you are a genius!!! This solves my issue with PSI 2 too (see thread "PSI loads but won't scan since Windows Update"). How did you come up with this idea? I never knew about account settings for services but read a little bit about it because of your post. It seems weird that giving the service less rights actually makes it work.

Thank you!

ElGato you are indeed a genius - thank you! I found this thread from one I had started with the same problem where someone pointed me to this solution so I am cross-posting this response here and there. I post this also to make one additional point. If like me you use a standard account for normal operations, that login will NOT work for the service. You must use the login for your administrator account. Good luck to all that have this odd problem.

Another big thanks to ElGato for the fix; PSI 2.0 no longer gets the abort pop-up and scans properly. I suspect that long term this needs to be fixed properly by the Secunia people.

Thank you ElGato !!!!! This also worked for me running windows 7 64 bit laptop. The problem all began after botched windows updates. Desktop running the same had and has no problems with Secunia PSI. Anyway followed your directions and now it works. I am not a tech so it took awhile to figure things out but I did and i thank you.

Thanks to all for your kind words multo gentile (no italics in this box). Thanks to bryash for the admin mention and to butter for what I think too. This all happened after the windows updates on update day. My logic and an examination of my PSIlog, showed the program trying to open a connection and being blocked. Even after a firewall rule allowing the program still happening, so I though that the agent was not logging in properly to the computer for access to the net. This has to be just a workaround. All those years with my old Amiga at the molecular level paid off. Does anyone know if Secunia monitors/checks these forums?

I've had the same problem for a few days. I tried the solution mentioned above, but it didn't work for me. The problem is on my laptop running Vista, 64 bit, Secunia ver. 3.0.0.9016. My desktop is running Win 7, 64 bit, Secunia ver. 3.0 also and it's working fine. Both computers were just updated with the latest Windows updates. Not sure why the solution mentioned above didn't work for me, because I do believe that it addresses the problem.
Any thoughts?

Thanks ElGato, Great detective work!
I was successfull in following your instructions on my Dell studio. Secunia is now loading again.
In case anyone else needs to get to the Service function on a Vista Premium machine I found the path to be:
Settings > Control Panel > Administrative Tools (open) > Services (open) >

On Vista Ultimate it is Start > Programs > Administrative Tools > Services >

Then:
Select Secunia PSI Agent > Right Click > Choose Properties > Click Log On tab > Mark This Account > Click Browse > Click Advanced >
Click Find Now > Choose a user name > Click OK > Click OK > Enter Password for this user > Click Apply
I hope I got this right!

In my case it didn't work. I got an error login. I was trying my user name, Admin account and nothing. It can be login only as an local account. And in log file I see all file inspecting, downloading definitions, downloading new updates for some apps ( Java, Fx, and so on ).

EDIT: Of course before Windows update, Secunia was works fine. My system is a Windows Vista Home Premium SP2 32 bit.

I had the same problem as mentioned in this post by many users.
I saw 'ElGato's' solution to the problem and 'FrankC's' explanation of steps required to change 'log on' of the Secunia PSI agent service under Administrative tools.

and this indeed solved this problem on my Windows 7 64 bit Service Pack 1

However I discussed this on Internet Relay Chat , Network : Freenode , Channel : ##Windows which has good number of windows experts and many said that it is not a good idea to provide 'log on' of an 'administrator account' to a service and I should keep it to 'local system account' as this may be contrary to security of PC. So I am concerned if this will effect the security or any of its factors of my PC in anyway?

When will Secunia will be releasing an official fix to this issue?

Sorry if I interpreted the process of changing the 'log on' of the startup service in a non accurate (layman) way. I think you will know what I mean :D

Awaiting replies :) Thanks.

I would like to add some interesting information to the solution by ElGato. As I wrote in an earlier reply in this thread his solution worked for me. However, as I wrote in the thread "PSI loads but won't scan since Windows Update" on 21st Oct, 2014 10:58, when I roll back to an image taken before the Windows Updates of October 14, another problem occurs with PSI 2: either PSI stops at "Verifying internet connection" or, when I completely reinstall PSI 2 or 3 (by first removing all PSI stuff including registry entries on my computer) I get the error "Unable to to retrieve PSI user ID from Secunia. ...". This happens even though the Windows Updates from October are not installed and my system has been rolled back to a state in which PSI previously worked well. In those cases, even ElGato's solution does not work. This leaves me puzzled. First, why does rolling back to an older state not work and second why does ElGato's solution not work in those cases.

I am not interested in solving the situation in those older states, I won't ask for that as I am happy that my current installation works well. However, it seems to be an indication that this situation is not related to October's Windows Updates, nor solely to the fact that PSI cannot make an internet connection. IMO it is clearly a PSI issue. The response by Secunia is however incredibly deafening (not).

@ Maurice Joyner

I had not yet properly replied to your response dated October 21st. Thanks for your answer, it is much appreciated. I will definitely check out Heimdal. I also looked at Qualys. What I found at Qualys's website seems to indicate that it is more of a business solution than a home user/ sole entrepreneur solution. Yet you say that it can be used for home use. Are you referring to Express Lite for Small Business or perhaps a different product? What makes me wonder is that there is a link "Subscription options and pricing" but on that page no prices are listed. Usually that means one needs to contact a company directly and then the prices are not exactly cheap. Also, does Qualys check local applications too (e.g. VLC Media Player) and not just web applications, as I read somewhere?

Also, you pointed me to the User ID string in the registry. However, the purpose of the complete uninstall of PSI using Revo Uninstaller was to install it fresh (that is why I had Revo Uninstaller also delete the registry items including the User ID), similar to a first installation on a computer. In that case I assume PSI would obtain a fresh ID, but that is where it hangs and the error appears. It seems that in that state a fresh install is not possible.

Thanks in advance for your reply.
Best regards.

I'm jumping in on this thread in the hope of some illumination.

I'm administrating 7 PCs all running different flavours of W7, all running PSI 3.9016, till recently without problems. On only one of them since a week PSI hangs on the "loading" screen with the PSIA process on the list, but at 0% CPU. The tray icon is RED (some programs need manual updating), but a list is (obviously) never presented.

I then tried the trick suggested here with the change of the service account to an enabled user. Result: the tray icon changed to GREY (suggesting I should check internet connectivity, which is OK). On reverting to the "local system" account the icon became RED again, but the load screen hung as before.

Any suggestions anyone?

Same here. Read the FAQ, checked the PSI and Win 7 error log(s), confirmed the settings mentioned in the FAQ, concluded they are all as they should be. Uninstalled + reinstalled Secunia PSI, twice actually after having cleaned out all residual entries in the Win 7 registry as well the 2nd time. To no avail.

Something changed, and it was in Secunisa server side, of that I'm pretty sure by now. But it was actually *before* the latest batch of MS patches were applied, not after. Because my PSI 2.0.0 stopped working (cannot load, just hangs) on my Win 7 laptop *before* I had applied the patches for Win 7 that came in on Oct patch Tuesday -- I don't let them on automatically but always review manually and chose the time to do it myself.

The timing coincides approx with MS patch Tue Oct, but it's not the actual patches themselves that made PSI stop working. If there is causality with MS patches, then it must have to do with MS Update service itself, I just cannot understand what that would be.

Reading this thread we see at least 1 or 2 persons have chosen to e-mail support@secunia.com with the issue. But no one has come back with any comment or summary about the result (if any). No one from Secunia ever comments/posts here, so it's really hard to understand if there's an issue at their end or if they're even aware if it.

In fact, it may be that they don't really care at all. If those are the rules for using PSI (YOU ARE ON YOUR OWN) then fine, but still a red flag should be raised even for the PSI ppl if a substantial amount of the PSI user base seems to have a show stopper problem of this kind.

My conclusion is: depending on some or other setting you have on your Win PC (mostly it appears to have hit Win 7, but I don't know why!), the change at the server side has made PSI stop working completely. It can no longer talk to the Secunia server via HTTPS: psi.secunia.com. It's not an Internet connectivity problem at the client side, not a scripting enabling problem, not an issue with the Secunia Agent Service (meaning: neither Firewall, nor AV is at fault). I've checked around thoroughly. I even added exceptions for the psi.exe and psia.exe in my Symantec AV solution. All to no avail, the HTTPS communication with Secunia server(s) refuses to work, it just times out. It's very clear from the error/debug log created by PSI. It doesn't really give a clue as to WHY it doesn't work. I suspect that can only be seen at the server side.

I was about to send Q & info to support@secunia.com myself, but lack of time prevented me. Right now, PSI is not installed on my Win 7 laptop and it may be that it never comes back. Shame really, beacuse it's been quite useful and always worked flawlessly until now. Even applying updates for various things, like Java and Flash (NPI, ActiveX) etc, has always worked perfectly so I've been impressed.

/M

On only one of them since a week PSI hangs on the "loading" screen with the PSIA process on the list, but at 0% CPU. The tray icon is RED (some programs need manual updating), but a list is (obviously) never presented.

I then tried the trick suggested here with the change of the service account to an enabled user. Result: the tray icon changed to GREY (suggesting I should check internet connectivity, which is OK). On reverting to the "local system" account the icon became RED again, but the load screen hung as before.

Interesting. So, a conclusion here may be that it's some setting which is per account (Local System, Administrator, any ordinary user account) which makes the difference to make it work again, i.e. make the HTTPS communication with psi.secunia.com function as before.

And on that one-out-of-seven PCs you have, that setting just happens to not be different between Local System and the other account you tried to run PSIA.exe as (Secunia Agent Service). For other ppl, that setting has been different and because of that it started working again for them.

Makes sense?

We just have to figure out what the setting is, if I'm right Secunia changed something in their server side (prob w/o knowing it, e.g. at a change or upgrade they made) so psi.secunia.com now behaves differently than before. If it's an MS Win server (not unlikely!), it might even be the MS patches applied to it that did this!

Clearly it's possible to make it work as before by changing something at the client side (our side to to speak). It would really help if Secunia ppl engaged in this show stopper problem, but it appears they don't care at all about a whole bunch of PSI users having a show stopper issue.

If anyone is a bit disillusioned with Secunia and their dismal support, see my post from earlier in this thread.

Heimdal is not as comprehensive as Seunia but it does look after all of the important and most vulnerable programs. I am very satisfied and would definitely recommend it.

Thanks Willem for informing all of us. Finally some sign of life from Secunia. I would say they should not only inform us when the issue is solved, but also that they know about the issue and are working on a solution. Can you imagine all the time and energy all of us have spent collectively on tackling this problem?! If you multiply that by an hourly wage... Just one little message on this forum could have done a lot.

Thanks again and let's hope that the solution follows quickly.

Best regards & een goed weekend,

I have downloaded and installed Heimdal.
Got an update for Flash first thing.
Secunia is just taking too long.

Thank you all for all your efforts.

One thing I noticed that may be relevant to this HTTPS communication issue with psi.secunia.com which seems to be at the core of this PSI load problem.

It's about TLS settings on the Win 7 PC I've struggled with in this case. In Internet Options -> Advanced, the setting for TLS 1.0 was un-checked on this computer, and to my knowledge it has been so for a long time during which PSI 2.0.0 has loaded and done it's job perfectly.
Also, I've not noticed any misbehaviour from any Web site during >12 months around HTTPS (that doesn't mean there has been none, but obviously not something we've noticed)

So it's been set like this:

v Use SSL 2.0
v Use SSL 3.0
Use TLS 1.0
v Use TLS 1.1
v Use TLS 2.1

I discovered that with these settings, I could not even surf to https://www.secunia.com. At all. Neither with Google Chrome, nor with MSIE 9. It was also impossible to log in with the local account I created (to post in this forum) with TLS 1.0 turned off -- an empty popup, with an error message inside it just came up ("cannot load this page"). In Google Chrome it appeared to make no difference changing the TLS 1.0 setting (with or without a reboot in between), but with MSIE 9 it did indeed make a difference! Turn on TLS 1.0 and then I could log in and post in the forum AOK. Incidentally, I've written all my forum posts on the very Win 7 PC showing the PSI load problem.

The reason Google Chrome behaves differenly than MSIE 9 in this case *can* be due to a bug in it, there has been an issue fairly recently about Chrome not properly obeying those particular settings shown above. (They can be reached from a Settings menu in Chrome as well as from Win 7 itself.)

Interesting...
Right now I tried to log into my secunia forum account with Google Chrome, and *now* it works correctly. Just as well as with MSIE 9. So it seems that it had a connection to using https://secunia.com/community/forum URL as opposed to http://

Var3Gen's suggestion INDEED worked on one system in my flock where the problem occurred. I have not yet been able to test it on the other and will update you all in due course. After selecting TLS V1.0 in the internet security options PSI loaded AND scanned! Very many thanks.

It seems that this is related to POODLE (see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/POODLE). SSL was found to be vulnerable and the general advice to website owners is to switch off SSL fall back. This means that only TLS can be used. What I think has happened is that Secunia did switch off SSL, but systems which do not have the correct settings (i.e. TLS 1.0 switched off) can then not contact Secunia's servers anymore.

The question I have however is how it is possible that ElGato's workaround also did the trick for me and many others (but not all). What may be possible is that the Local System account in Services has TLS switched off, and the personal account has it switched on. Maybe there are some people with a more technical background who can contribute here. This could be a plausible explanation.

EDIT: I am now certain this issue is POODLE related. I have one computer on which ElGato's solution to change the service account for Secunia PSI Agent worked. However, now I also got it to work keeping the service on the Local System account. In order to do so you have to be able to access Group Policy Management, which is only available on Professional, Enterprise and Ultimate editions of Windows.

Open Group Policy Management by opening the Run dialog (Win + R) and then enter gpedit.msc. Then follow the instructions in the section "Disable SSL 3.0 and enable TLS 1.0, TLS 1.1, and TLS 1.2 for Internet Explorer in Group Policy" on https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/securi...

I was able to run PSI 2.0 without any issue on my Vista Ultimate 32-bit system with the service account set to Local System. Apparently the conclusion is indeed that Secunia has switched off SSL, but that causes problems for accounts that do not have TLS 1.0 enabled. In my case I had already manually switched on TLS and switched off SSL when the POODLE issue was published and that is why changing the user account for the Secunia PSI Agent service worked. Those who had not done this, still had the issue (like Willem Overbeeke). The Group Policy modification changes the SSL/TLS setting for all accounts, thus in that case there is no need to change the user account in services anymore.

EDIT 2: It might be that after next week's November Windows Updates all of this is not necessary anymore, because Microsoft will issue a patch for Poodle. I think that patch will switch on TLS for all systems and then PSI should work again. I guess we'll have to wait and see.

Thanks for the help pimjoosten,

I am using Firefox as my browser. It has the Connection Settings as "Use System Proxy Settings"
So, I made the changes recommended in :

https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/securi...
Security Advisor 3009008, Apply Workarounds

in the Internet Settings in the control panel:

Vista > Start Button > Settings > Control Panel > Internet Options > Advanced Tab > Scroll to Security > Tick all TLS entries, Un-tick all SSL entries

This worked for Secunia on a Vista Ultimate 64 bit desktop and on a Vista Premium laptop.

YES, finally an answer that worked. Thanks pimjoosten and FrankC. That did the trick. I have Vista Ultimate 64 bit. I just went to "control panel", unchecked SSL 2.0 and checked TLS 1.0. All is good.

Still no luck for me on my two PC's (windows Vista, Windows 7). Secunia loads again, but fails scanning. The scan stops with the message: "Scan aborted". I think the second step ("Downloading search rules from Secunia (https)") fails (it immediately steps to the second-last steps)... FYI, I'm using version 2.0.0.4003.

Settings were as before, only changed ssl/tls settings as mentioned above (disabled ssl3, enables all tls )

thx,

Anton

@AntonJ: You seem to have the exact situation I had. PSI apparently uses 2 different accounts and only one is currently able to use TLS. You can do either of these two things

1. If you have a Professional, Enterprise or Ultimate edition you can change the Group Policy settings as described in the Microsoft article. This is different than the procedure via the Control Panel. The latter one only changes the security settings of your own account, not those of the Local System account that the PSI Agent service uses. In that case PSI still does not work. If you change the settings via Group Policy, you change them for all accounts and PSI should start to work again.

2. Adjust the user account of the PSI agent service as ElGato described in his post dated October 22nd. This results in PSI only needing your own user account, which likely already has the correct security settings.

I think these solutions should work in your case. Let me know how you fare with it.

Hello PimJoosten,

thx for the help, it's working now. (needed to configure the service as a local user with admin rights, and set the correct IE settings of that user). Thank you all for your support, you're doing a great job!

You are welcome. However, thanks must also go to var3gen (which I forgot to do in my earlier post, my apologies for that), because he found out that the issue is SSL/TLS related. I merely connected the dots, because I could combine that fact with my knowledge about Poodle. Teamwork really pays off!!

Thanks ElGato! You're solution worked for me after I finally understood what you did. My PSI 2.0 would abort just a few seconds into scanning for the last 3 weeks. My OS is Windows Vista Home Premium w/SP2.
I'll try to explain the solution with more detail. - - - - -
Click the Window "start" button in the corner of your screen.
Then search for the program folder "Administrative Tools" and click it.
Then open "Services" in that folder with double click or a right click "open".
In the "Services" window scroll down to "Secunia PSI Agent", right click then click "properties"
Select the "Log On" tab.
Check the "This account:" button and then enter your Window's user name and password (blank if you don't use a password) that you normally use when booting your computer. Then click "Apply" button & then click "OK" button.
Back in the "Services" window click the link to "Start" or "Restart"
Close the "Services" window.
Now try to run Secunia PSI.

Thanks to all!
I had the same problem of being stuck in "Verifying internet connection" when opening PSI 2.0.0.4003 on my Win XP Home SP3 desktop since about middle of last October.
Reinstalling PSI 2.0.0.4003 or 2.0.0.3001 were no solutions.
Stopping and restarting "Secunia PSI agent" was also not a solution.
Changing the account settings to local account of "Secunia PSI agent" in Windows Services did not work alone.
I also had to change the SSL/TLS settings in Windows Internet Options advanced settings (my first test was to enable TLS1.0 and disable SSL2.0 and 3.0) to get PSI completely open.
Then the scan was however not working and was always ending in "Scan Abort".
But when I changed the account settings to my account of "Secunia PSI agent" in Windows Services, then I could launch a scan by PSI.
I also tested to the change again the SSL/TLS settings in Windows Internet Options advanced settings and the results is that enabling TLS1.0 (regardless of SSL2.0 and 3.0 settings) always allows PSI to completely open without being stuck in "Verifying internet connection".
However, after reinstalling version 2.0.0.4003, regardless of the SSL/TLS settings in Windows Internet Options advanced settings, I always got "Scan abort" very quickly (just a few seconds).
Then after changing again the account settings to my account of "Secunia PSI agent" in Windows Services (probably this was changed by the reinstall of version 2.0.0.4003), then I could launch a scan by PSI.
I have 2 questions:
- is there any drawback to keep TLS1.0 always enabled in Windows Internet Options?
- is there any drawback to keep the account settings to my account of "Secunia PSI agent" in Windows Services?
Thank again to all for your help!

P.S.: sorry if I'm may not always be clear in my explanations but I'm not a native English writer ;-)

Hello sp80,

First of all: your English is very good! I could understand your post very well.

Now about your questions:
- is there any drawback to keep TLS1.0 always enabled in Windows Internet Options?
No, TLS is actually better than SSL. And since SSL has been broken it will be disabled by default with tomorrow's Windows Updates. The only thing you could encounter is that you try to approach a website that does not support TLS (yet). Because you have switched off SSL the website is simply not shown, similar to what happens on Secunia's website and in PSI. The chances of this are rather slim, because most websites support TLS nowadays.

- is there any drawback to keep the account settings to my account of "Secunia PSI agent" in Windows Services?
I am not an expert on this, but I have read a little bit about services accounts because of this issue. I found out that Microsoft actually advices to use the personal account when possible. The Local system account has more rights than your personal account (even if that is an administrator account). I just tried to find the link to the Microsoft page where I read it, but was unable to. If you search on the internet you can find it, if you wish.

I hope this was helpful.
Best regards.

Hi ,

FYI ; my default settings for Windows Internet Options were :-

not using SSL 2.0 but using SSL3.0 and TLS 1.0 ,1.1 and 1.2. and my PSI 2.0.0.3003 was fine - nearly always has been .

On my W 8.1.1 64 bit the run SSL3.0 was still set to "use" after yesterday's (Tuesday 11/11/2014) Windows/M$ updates - so , apparently , no "obvious" fix for my system .

You need to consider setting SSL3.0 to "not using" in Windows Internet Settings - which covers IE - and separately in any other browsers you might use .

Maurice Joyce has posted this useful link in another thread :-

http://www.thewindowsclub.com/ssl-3-0-secure-brows...

It also contains this link to test each browser to see if you have negated the SSL3.0 (potential) security vulnerability :-

https://www.poodletest.com/

My Stable Chrome 38.0.2125.122m was "automatically" not vulnerable but I needed turn SSL3.0 off for my IE 11.x and my Firefox 33.1 .

I have no side affects so far .

Hope this is helpful .

Take care

Anthony
