SPI claims that Adobe Reader 10.1.16.13 would be end of life and demands I update to Adobe Reader 10.x. Using the update function of Adobe Reader results in a "no updates available" message, and when trying to download from adobe.com the latest version offered there is 10.1.4.

I'm confused!

Why does SPI demand I upgrade to a SW version which is not available for my OS? And (no SPI issue but strange anyway): How comes I have an apparently higher version of Adobe Reader installed than available on the Adobe download site?

I do not use Adobe products but 10.1.1 (6.13) was released on or about Sept 2011.

Version 10.1.4 which is being offered was released on or about Aug 2012.

That appears to tally in that 10.1.4 is a greater number than 10.1.1

If you go here https://get.adobe.com/uk/reader/otherversions/

you can programme that to accept Vista in German.

Thanks, Maurice, excellent answer as always!

I figure I'm trapped between 4 problems around Acrobat Reader:

* SPI points to a false update which does not exists for my computer under Vista
* Adobe Reader doesn't know of it's own updates.
* Adobe is using a weired version number scheme where 4 is bigger than 11.
* And the worst of all: Adobe Reader for Vista has not been updated for years!

I guess it's time to drop Adobe Reader and look for an alternative. PDF XChange Viewer looks good at a first glance, maybe I'll try this one.

Thanks again for your great and always appreciated help, Maurice!

BTW: Problem no. 5 - the Secunia web page did not send me an email alert to make me aware of this answer ...

For anyone else looking at this, Adobe Reader X support ended on November 15 2015.

https://helpx.adobe.com/acrobat/kb/end-of-support-...

Adobe Reader X was the last version for Vista although it was claimed Reader XI would work.

Version 10.1.4 has been the version on the download site for years. It's necessary to use the built in updater to bring it up to the last version 10.1.16 or download from here: http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/product.jsp...

Until Vista becomes unsafe to use with its own end of support next year, it would be advisable to use an alternative.
