Today Secunia said that MS SQL Server 2005 Compact Edition was 'End of Life'. For MS's Photo Gallery to work it needs the 2005 SQL server. The page that Secunia took me to offered no updates that worked with Photo Gallery. The only solution I could do was to select Secunia's ignore updates.

Anybody have any ideas on how to update this?

My computer is Windows7/pro/64

I don't have a solution, but an addition to the problem. I can't even find a way to uninstall SQL Server Compact Edition. I've got other photo programs so if that's all this was installed for, I would have no problem uninstalling if I could figure out the proper way.

I ended up canning Photo Gallery. Had to use Windows uninstaller, you click to uninstall in 'Programs and Features' in the Control Panel>> Windows Essentials, You are given the option to pick what program (in Essentials) that you want to uninstall. You can then just select Photo Gallery or other programs in Essentials.

I think the MS SQL Server was also in the 'Programs and Features' if it is, it's easy to uninstall. If not you could right click on it in Secunia and find where it is located and delete it there.

I to have many photo programs, but I installed Faststone to fill in what I used PG for (FS seems faster and smaller than PG). Most of the time I use DPP ImageBrowser or Rawtherapee for my raw's. I can than use them as tiff's in PS/CS2 (another program that has reached 'end of life').

A bit of a rant against MS, it seems, and I've read in other places, of other things MS has done to try and get everyone to use W 10 by not supporting to their fullest, their older systems.

Since April 2016, MS SQL Server 2005 Compact Edition is no longer supported by Microsoft. As PSI said, "End of Life," aka death. So if you don't need any SQL Server, just remove the corpse and you're done. No fix is available through MS updates, or anywhere else, AFAIK. I have Win8.1.

If you do need (or just want) to have some MS SQL Server, there's a free version which will be supported by MS until mid-2019. I am not an expert, so there may be errors in the rest of what I write here. Experts please post corrections; everyone at your own risk.

The free version which I downloaded and installed is "Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2 SP2 Express Edition" www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=3 0438 There are versions for both 32-bit and 64-bit architectures.
There is a service pack 3 for Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2, but I think that one needs to install SP2 first, then download and install Service Pack 3. Not sure, and I may not go to SP3. The SP3 is not available through Windows Update.

After installing the download referenced above, then run Windows Update which [i]will[i] get you security patches for Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2 SP2 Express Edition. After all those hundreds of megabytes of downloads, Secunia PSI should be happy again, showing 100% with nothing ignored.

Also, when I did the install of SQL Server 2008, I first tried the option to "upgrade" from SQL Server 2005 Compact Edition, and that failed. So I did 2008 as a new install, then uninstalled 2005. Seems to have worked.
