Support for MS SQL Server 2005 Compact Edition has ended. PSI reports it is "End of Life" and steers you toward Windows Update - which is no help whatsoever.

Anyone got any ideas about what to do in this case? I know I cannot be the only one affected.

Anybody?

For me, PSI is flagging these two instances of a DLL as MS SQL Server 2005 Compact Edition

C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft SQL Server Compact Edition\v3.1\System.Data.SqlServerCe.dll, version 3.0.5300.0
C:\Windows\assembly\GAC_MSIL\System.Data.SqlServer Ce\9.0.242.0__89845dcd8080cc91\System.Data.SqlServ erCe.dll, version 3.0.5300.0

As you say, MS Update is no help.

I had the same problem as you, I even started another thread here. I don't think that it can be updated, so what I did is delete it and find if any programs that you use need it. In my case MS's Photo Gallery was the program that had installed it and needed it. I was able to get back the MS SQL Server by reinstalling Photo Gallery. You like me could just reinstall the program that needs the MS SQL Ser. and it will reinstall the MS SQL Server. Then you have the choice of either seeing Secunia's warnings or select for Secunia to ignore the problem.

After further thought I decided I really did not need Photo Gallery, (some people do as they have tagged their photos with it). I deleted it and MSQL Server and downloaded Faststone to take its place. It seems to have a small footprint and works quite well, better than Photo Gallery. I have so many other photo programs I don't know if I will end up keeping Faststone or not.

My final thought on the subject; I think much of the problems are that MS has decided to try and strong arm people into using Windows 10 and not maintaining the programs for Windows 7 and 8.1.

Since April 2016, MS SQL Server 2005 Compact Edition is no longer supported by Microsoft. As PSI said, "End-of-Life," aka death. So if you don't need any SQL Server, just remove the corpse and you're done. No fix is available through MS updates, or anywhere else, AFAIK. I have Win8.1.

If you do need (or just want) to have some MS SQL Server, there's a free version which will be supported by MS until mid-2019. I am not an expert, so there may be errors in the rest of what I write here. Experts please post corrections; everyone at your own risk. (see next post)

The free version which I downloaded and installed is "Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2 SP2 Express Edition" www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=3 0438 There are versions for both 32-bit and 64-bit
architectures.
There is a service pack 3 for Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2, but I think that one needs to install SP2 first, then download and install Service Pack 3. Not sure, and I may not go to SP3. The SP3 is not available
through Windows Update. (see next post)

After installing the download referenced above, then run Windows Update which will get you security patches for Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2 SP2 - Express Edition. After all those hundreds of megabytes of downloads, Secunia PSI should be happy again, showing 100% with nothing ignored.

Also, when I did the install of SQL Server 2008, I first tried the option to "upgrade" from SQL Server 2005 Compact Edition, and that failed. So I did 2008 as a new install, then uninstalled 2005. Seems to have worked.

I have Windows 10 and Secunia PSI flagged the end of SQL server 2005 Express, and told me to update it to the safe version of 2008. The "click to update" took me to the new version 2014 which is not offered free, and I searched for the 2008 version. Finally I hit upon the Windows SQL Server 2008 with SP2, which I downloaded and began to install, but it tells me this version is not compatible with Windows 10, so I'm left with this quandary. Thanks to Microsoft for making this so user unfriendly. Windows 10 is a platform for commercials, as is most of media now, and there are large chunks of vaporware. Same as it ever was. Can someone help me out of the forest, please? Is the only answer to uninstall the SQL server and dump the Photo Gallery? And can I get rid of Microsoft Edge?

I ended up dumping them, I already had numerous photo programs, DPP 3&4, ImageBrowser, Rawtherapee, and PS CS2 (which is also end of life). I tried XnView and Faststone, both were pretty good, but I preferred XnView. As it was I ended up deleting them too.
