I have JAVA JRE 1.6/6X as viewed through the Control Panel. Secunia is telling me I need to patch. Okay - however, when I go to the Java download site - SEVERAL downloads are available - I have no idea which one is right for me.

Pitiful novice here == thanks in advance for any assist.

If you're going to post a solution that is linked to another thread, then please post the link. Otherwise it is very difficult to find.

U are correct - version 6 update 14 is secure but it has got bugs hence JAVA have issued a new release Version 6 update 15.

JAVA have made things a lot easier of late & it is a fairly easy task to update to the latest version & remove all the dross from previous versions.

If U have not got the latest version of JAVA (Version 6 Update 15) download it from here:
http://www.filehippo.com/download_java_runtime/

Once the update is complete go to Control Panel>JAVA icon>Update Tab and take the tick out of box marked "Check for updates auto ....." (This will prevent a useless file called JUSCHED from being place in your start up menu.

Now remove all the old dross from previous versions.

The tool will remove all old versions, any useless files from previous installs except for the version U have just installed

http://raproducts.org/

*This link takes U to the site - select the Windows Binary (zip) option.
*This will lead U to Sourceforge.net to download it.
*Save the download to desktop.
*Activate the desktop zip icon which exposes the JAVARA EXE file. Click it
*Select RUN when asked.
*Select your language.
*The tool will now appear on the desktop - select REMOVE OLDER VERSIONS
*Once complete select ADDITIONAL TASKS - tick all boxes & activate.

* Right click on the desktop JAVARA zip file & delete it.

Future Updates Of JAVA.

Once all the old JAVA dross is removed future updating is easy.

Go to Start>Control Panel>click on the JAVA icon>select the Update tab>click the Update Now button.

Once the update is complete take the tick out of box marked "Check for updates auto ....." (This will prevent a useless file called JUSCHED from being place in your start up menu.

Run PSI & all aspects should register as secure.

Hi,

Just a note that PSI is pointing to the wrong advisory:

http://secunia.com/advisories/34451/

I have JRE 6 Update 14 installed, and it is correctly listed as "insecure" in PSI (since Update 15 is now available), but PSI's advisory is for an older vulnerability which was patched in Update 13. Just for clarity's sake, PSI does correctly detect my version as Update 14 (Version Detected: 6.0.140.8).

Secunia, please make sure you link to the right advisory / advisories when listing a program as insecure.

Best Wishes,
Kurosh

Hi,Does the removal tool apply to vista? It doesn,t mention it as a requirement. Also there are 3 downloads on the page, which one do you dwnload, the one colab as this requires your e-mail and password.Just playing safe, thanks for info. Is unchecking auto updates wise as one tends to forget to update regularly, then you are reliant on psi

I did the update suggested by Secunia. But in vain it did not fix anything.
I went to http://www.java.com/en/index.jsp and downloaded the latest version the Java(TM) Update 15.
Then I went the configuration screen > software and removed the old version.
Restarted the computer and installed the latest download.
And did a new scan and it worked perfect.
