Leendirt Kip has a thread running headed "http://secunia.com/community/forum/thread/show/406..." It was suggested that he ensures he has added both Secunia sites to the IE8 Trusted sites viz the http and the https sites. This recommendation appears quite often here. Leendirt said he couldn't add the http address and I posted that I used to have that problem . A forum told me to uncheck "Require server verification" and so I did. You can then add http sites. Leendirt rightly says he doesn't want to do that without knowing if there are any bad consequences. Can anyone advise us on this please? Is it safe to uncheck it. (Provided they're known to be safe http sites such as Secunia's. -- taffy078, West Yorkshire, UK HP Envy Win10 PC and Compaq Presario screwed up by forced upgrade to Win10 from WIn7 |

Hi, Whether or not it's safe to add a site depends entirely on the site. When you add a site as "trusted", you allow that site to download files (usually ActiveX Controls) on your computer, and do other things that can be associated with risk. However, using http (unencrypted http) or https (http over ssl) doesn't change the risks inherent to "trusted sites" settings. You can safely disable "require https" for all URL's. What matters is that you don't add sites you don't trust. Https prevents eavesdropping, but doesn't defend against attack. For more information, see: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SSL Hope this helps. |
