I have version 3.1.0.27, but it's not in the add/remove section. How do I safely remove this WinPcap program? I don't even remember adding this program. Someone please help.

Thanks,
tennisknight

This gives the backdrop to the programme.

http://secunia.com/community/forum/thread/show/108...

Try this - if the programme is registered it will remove it.

Windows Installer Cleanup Utility
=======================
Although U will see items listed this tool should NOT be used to remove any part of Microsoft Office 2007.
If you are attempting to uninstall Microsoft Office 2007 use this tool:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/971179

If a programme is installed using Windows Installer it can be removed by using the Microsoft Cleanup Utility.

Download it from here:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290301

Once downloaded, open the programme & scroll up & down looking for the programme U wish to uninstall.

If found, highlight it & click the remove button (bottom right)

Reboot.

If this post has solved your problem could you please select the ACCEPT option. This will lock the thread and stop you & I from receiving unnecessary update emails.

I am off to bed now. If U cannot find the programme with my advice above there is another method if U are sure it has no uninstaller U can find.

What OS are U using?

Are U happy to remove it via the Registry if I give U clear instuctions? Post back here & I will action it tomorrow unless someone else picks up the thread.

I tried the cleanup utility, but I could not find the program in the list.

I'll be glad to try some other possible method to remove this program.

Thanks,

OK - U did not state which OS U are using. XP or Vista or 7?

To be sure we are heading in the right direction what is the path that PSI found & where is the file located within PSI? Insecure Tab or End of Life or Insecure Browsing or Patched.

FINDING A VULNERABILITY FILE PATH
=================================

To locate the exact file that the Secunia PSI has detected, use or switch to the ADVANCED interface, then :

1 Click on the + sign of the programme to "expand' it.
2 Click on Technical Details in the Toolbox to see the installation path of the detected file. (Copy (CTRL+C) & paste (CTRL+V) the Installation Path of the file back to the Forum if U are unsure what to do next.

Sorry for the delayed response.

It's an XP operating system and the program is in the "end of life" section.

Technical details about this installation of WinPcap 3.x, you can use this information to determine why the Secunia PSI detected the program and the security state of it.

Version Detected:

CLEARING UP LEFTOVERS FROM AN UNINSTALL USING THE REGISTRY
================================================== ========
Sorry, this post is a bit long but I do not know your skill level so have included all basic details.

A bit of information that U can refer to once in the registry to help with navigation & exposed details.

1. The Registry has exactly the same layout as Windows Explorer but only has one main folder called Computer - it is in the LEFT pane at the top.

2. The Computer folder has 5 sub-folders underneath starting with HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT & ending with HKEY_CURRENT_CONFIG

For this exercise U should only open & delete, if necessary, from the following sub-folders.
a. HKEY_CURRENT_USER
b. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE

3. The RIGHT pane exposes details of the sub folders.

* U may wish to copy (CTRL+C) & paste (CTRL+V) the next bit to Notepad or Word.

* IF U ARE NOT FAMILIAR WITH THE REGISTRY U WILL BE PERFECTLY SAFE IF U JUST FOLLOW THE SCRIPT BELOW. CHANGING OTHER SETTINGS THAT U BELIEVE MAY HELP YOUR CAUSE COULD PROVE TROUBLESOME!

Go to Start>Run>In the box that appears type REGEDIT>click OK.

U are now in the registry and what has previously been explained should be seen. Look in the LEFT pane for the key HEY_CURRENT_USER>expand the key by clicking on the + sign.

Look for SOFTWARE>expand that key by clicking on the + sign. All the programmes installed (and no doubt many more U thought U had uninstalled) on the PC are exposed.

RIGHT click on the folder of the programme U wish to remove & select delete. When U click on any key it is normal that the "nitty gritty" elements of that folder are exposed in the right hand pane.

Now navigate to key HEY_LOCAL_MACHINE> expand SOFTWARE & repeat the procedure U have just done.

It is worth spending a bit of time with these two keys as there could be other dross in there. JUST BE CAREFUL & ONLY REMOVE PROGRAMMES U ARE ABSOLUTELY SURE ARE NO LONGER INSTALLED ON YOUR PC. IF UNSURE ASK BEFORE DELETING.

If U have removed extra dross have U cleared it from both HEY areas?

If happy, exit the registry by clicking the red X (top right).

Reboot.

Complete a full rescan with PSI & your original problem should have been removed.

I tried to do what you said, but the program isn't showing up in the registry either. But I know it's on my computer because it has its own program folder in Windows Explorer with three files in it totaling 180 KB. I also have two other files on my pc titled, "wpcap.dll" and "packet.*".

What other options do I have to safely remove this program?

Thanks,
tennisknight

So just delete the program folder and the dll file and the packet file and then rescan?
