The previous threads with all their technical detail are all totally over the top for me, I'm afraid. I would like to start again, and ask Secunia to give me a simple answer to a simple question:

* Secunia has just scanned my computer and reports that Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 Redistributable Package 9.0.30729.1 is insecure.

* When I click Secunia's "Download Solution" link, I get the following Microsoft page:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?fa...

* This Microsoft page does not list Windows 7 on its list of "System Requirements".

* Since I am using 32 bit Windows 7, the download page does not apply to me.

* What do I do now?

I'm having the same problem with Win 7 x64.....
In my case, the concerned file was required during the normal installation of Agnitum's Outpost Firewall Pro, so it is really a "must be" file !

I hope that we'll get a solution soon from Secunia.

Hi,

You can either choose to apply the solution for the older operating systems, in which case you want the x84 executable (as this means 32-bit).

Alternatively, you could upgrade to Visual C++ Redistributable 2010 (x86 version found here: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?Fa...) and simply remove the old version.

You can get the x64 version here:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?Fa...

These versions should show up in Microsoft Update for Windows 7 systems.

hope this helps.

Thanks for that. I've now downloaded and installed the 2010 version of Visual C++ Redistributable 2010. It is listed in "Uninstall or change a programme" as
* Microsoft Visual C++ 2010 Redistributable - 10.0.303197

Two more questions:

1. Should I now uninstall all six 2005 and 2008 C++ programmes? They are:
* Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 ATL Upgrade kb973923 - x86 8.0.50727.4053
* Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 Redistributable
* Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 Redistributable (this item appears twice on the list "Uninstall or change a program")
* Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 ATL Upgrade kb973924 - x86 9.0.30729.4148
* Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 Redistributable - x86 - 9.0.21022
* Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 Redistributable - x86 9.0.30729.17

I'm not sure what the "ATL Upgrades" are, and whether these should also be upgraded to 2010.

2. Will the various programmes on my computer that presently depend on these six items now run with the Microsoft Visual C++ 2010 Redistributable instead?

Hi,

Secunia and the PSI can't tell you what to do - we can only highlight vulnerabilities. Unless the programs are marked as insecure, though, there should not be any immediate danger in keeping them installed.

As far as I can tell, the Visual C++ Redistributables aren't backwards compatible. If you want a more accurate answer, I suggest you contact Microsoft Support.

hope this helps.

OK, besides downloading and installing Visual C++ 2010 Redistributable, I have now downloaded and installed the upgrade to Visual C++ 2008 Redistributable, even though Microsoft does not mention it as suitable for Windows 7.

The upgrade seemed to install properly, and Secunia now says that everything on my computer is secure (apart from the notorious IE8), so I will leave everything else well alone.

Thanks for your help.
