Hi,

Version 1.4.x is End-Of-life (EOL).. This means that there will never be any more updatesf or this product, as the vendor has stopped supporting it. However, for ease of use, the PSI updates you to the latest secure version automatically, which will be installed as a seperate products (Sun Java JRE 1.6.x / 6.x).

This also means that installing the update won't automatically remove the EOL version - that requires manual action.

hope this helps.

I ran into the same situation. Can you direct me as to what "manual action" I need to take? I am really a novice.

Thank You

FINDING A FILE PATH - ALL PSI VERSIONS EXCEPT VERSION 2 (BETA)

To locate the exact file that the Secunia PSI has detected, use or switch to the ADVANCED interface, then :

1 Click on the + sign of the programme to "expand' it.
2 Click on Technical Details in the Toolbox to see the installation path of the detected file. (Copy (CTRL+C) & paste (CTRL+V) the Installation Path of the file back to the Forum if U are unsure what to do next.

PSI VERSION 2 (BETA)

From the DASHBOARD page click on RESULTS.

1. This will show U the file that is vulnerable.
2. Click the + sign next to the file.
3. This will reveal the path.
4. Highlight it then copy (CTRL+C) & then paste (CTRL+V) that path back to the Forum if U do not know what to do next.

This is the installation path in question. Now what do I do with it?

Navigate to that path - right click on that file & select delete.

Full rescan & U should be OK.

I would also:
1. Navigate to Control Panel>Add/Remove.

2. Look for any entries starting with JRE,JSE,JDK & JAVA (TM) EXCEPT for JAVA (TM) 6 Update 21 (if U have not updated to 21 then leave 20 which is secure).

3. Uninstall all others.

Okay, as I stated, I am a real novice. At the risk of being a real pain in the ___, how do I go about navigating to that path? I have removed a few of the other end of life threats that were detected once I went to the advanced PSI by removing the programs with REVO uninstaller. So now I don't quite know how to get to this installation path. Any help and I will forever be in your debt!

There are numerous ways to delete the file.

1. If using PSI in the advanced mode click on the + sign by the JAVA entry.

2. The toolbox is displayed.

3. Click on the OPEN FOLDER option.

4. Now look for j2re1.4.2_03\bin\eula.dll

5. Right click on that entry & select DELETE.

6. Rescan & U will be OK.

If U have problems just ask again. It is no bother to me. We all have something to learn.

I think I got it now. I'm rescanning, will let you know. I always seem a little intimidated clicking around in the files and folders. I don't want to mess anything up.

The rescan seemed to get rid of the sun java. Now it is finding a number of other end of life threats in the advanced mode! This is getting to be a pain, but I'm learning! I think I will go back to simple mode when I am finished. It doesn't seem to detect as much junk! LOL!

Thank you so much for your help, I really appreciate it.

That is the problem with Simple Mode. In some respects it gives a false sense of security in that only a few programmes are seen.

Secunia's answer is that it is better to fix a few rather than none at all.

I would stick to advanced mode. Once U have cleared up all the problems it will not repeat itself. Reverting to Simple could result in the same problem U are having - a build up of vulnerabilities not seen in the simple mode which causes time consuming hassle.

If U want more help just create your own thread.

The vital bits to assist any helper are:

The OS & PSI in use.
The path to the vulnerabilty.
In your case repeating U are a novice in which case the helper should tailor his/her reply to match your requirements.

Have a nice weekend.

What is the path to the problem?

How to produce that is in my post above.

Post it here & it should be easy to fix.

Good News.

If all your problems are now resolved could U please lock (Accept) the thread. This will prevent us both from receiving update emails from "tag on" posts.

Have a nice weekend.
