I've just started using PSI, so may not understand correctly how it's meant to operate.

PSI did a scan today, but didn't identify the need to update iTunes. But, if I go into iTunes and "check for updates", iTunes reports that a new version is available (current version = 10.1.1.1, new version = 10.1.2). Does this mean that PSI malfunctioned?

No, because PSI only recognises security updates this update wasn't reported. I got the same a few days ago.

Thanks for that. What is the distinction between a "security update" and other sorts of updates? Can't all updates include some security aspects?

PSI only checks for programmes that have a known vulnerability that could affect the security of your system.

Vendors often update their programmes with cosmetic changes & bug fixes only. PSI is not interested in these.

This additional reading may help:

Hope this helps.

Thanks, that's really helpful. But also disappointing. I had hoped I'd be able to turn off all the "check for updates" settings in all my software and let PSI handle it. But since PSI only checks for "security" updates, I'll have to leave checking for other updates (upgrades, etc) to the native software (iTunes, etc). Which, in turn, means that I don't see what value I'll be getting out of PSI. Maybe I've missed something?

U are missing something. The ability to check your PC has not been made vulnerable (insecure) by a vendor programming error.
