I am using Windows 7 ultimate, IE9 Intel i7. I have secunia set to auto-update but I received an advisory from you that my version of videolan was out of date. When I tried to use the Dashboard's download button I received a message that said "an error occurred when trying to open the url" How do I solve this problem?
Please note that this error message also applied to other dashboard functions including "troubleshoot" and "go to the forum"

Please note I have successfully downloaded the Videolan update from their website and after rescanning Secunia is saying my computer is 100% secure.

Nonetheless I am accessing the community forum using your website not the dashboard.

Your advice would be appreciated.

U have included a hyperlink that allows anyone that clicks it to log on as U!

I have deleted the error for U & reproduced what U wrote below less the link.

Thanks Maurice,You were right. The registry key pointed to Firefox I have corrected this but now I get the following message

---------------------------
Secunia PSI
---------------------------
Web Browser path obtained from the registry is potentially unsafe. The requested command was not executed:

C:\Program Files (x86)\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe

It looks like IE is not set up correctly. Have U got Secunia in the trusted Zone as explained here:

Thanks again Maurice and my apologies for the hyperlink. I am not a sophisticated computer user. I have placed Secunia in the list of trusted sites and tried all the other suggestions but still come up with the same error message when I click on the visit the forum link and the update link but I can run scans.
I manage to visit the forum only by way of emails. If you require further information about my system please let me know.

Try updating PSI again to version 2.0.0.3002 from here:

http://secunia.com/vulnerability_scanning/personal...

There is a minor bug with updating/reinstalling PSI in Windows 7.

I would advise U use this method:

1. Right click Start>Open Windows Explorer>C>Program Files>(Program Files (x86) if using a 64 Bit System))>Secunia>PSI - now activate the uninstaller from the icon U can see.

2. Install the new version from the link above.

Hi Maurice

I have been trying all day to install version 3002 but keep on ending up with version 3001 and still cannot activate the visit the forum function, et cetera.

Hi,

Are you aware that even if you install 3002 the version number will be shown as 3001?

Hi

At the end of the day I did become aware of that but I was not sure if the blogs asserting that fact were official. The point is that the new version does not address my problem. Having said that; the problem is not that significant if I can still get automatic updates so I will have to wait and see for the next update.

Hey,

This has been fixed with the new version (The version number bug).

Can you reproduce the other issues with this release?
ftp://ftp.secunia.com/PSISetup.exe

Hope this helps.

Hi Emil

I have installed version 3003 but I continue to get the same response when I click on links such as "visit the forum" or "PDF Manual". I have used Windows 7 Fixit and although several issues are fixed; the dashboard problem is not affected.

Is there any further information I can provide that would be of assistance.

Thanks

Hello Emil

Following my last email I received advice that Lavasoft had released a Windows 7 compatible registry tuner. I ran this tuner which found and fixed 525 "errors" but I still get the same result with regards to the Dashboard links.

Best wishes

Hi,

The original reference to our FAQ was correct.

http://secunia.com/products/consumer/PSI/faq/#q9

This error occurs because the registry key specifying your default browser is not properly set. To solve it, try setting your preferred browser as default again.

If this has not resolved the problem, you can examine the registry key the PSI uses to determine your default browser. To see this, open the Registry Editor by typing "regedit" in either the Run box (WinXP) or in the "Program search field" (Vista/7), both found in the start menu.

Then navigate with regedit to "HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\HTTP\shell\open\command". This registry key configures your default browser, and the program specified here is what the PSI is having problems executing. Verify that the path points to your preferred browser, and that the browser indicated has not been removed and is still functional.

These are some typical registry keys from the most used browsers known to work with the PSI as an example. Please note that these examples are provided only as a courtesy, and Secunia does not officially recommend changing your registry to any of these values.

1. Internet Explorer
"C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\IEXPLORE.EXE" -nohome
2. Internet Explorer 32-bit on Windows 64-bit
"C:\Program Files (x86)\Internet Explorer\IEXPLORE.EXE" -nohome
3. Mozilla Firefox
"C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe" -requestPending -osint -url
4. Mozilla Firefox on Windows 64-bit
"C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe" -requestPending -osint -url "%1"
5. Opera
"C:\Program Files\Opera\Opera.exe" "%1"
6. Opera 32-bit on 64-bit Windows
"C:\Program Files (x86)\Opera\Opera.exe" "%1"
7. Google Chrome
"C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Local Settings\Application Data \Google\Chrome\Application\chrome.exe" -- "%1"
Substitute your username for \Administrator\ for this to work

8. Apple Safari
"C:\Program Files\Safari\Safari.exe" -url "%1"
9. Apple Safari 32-bit on 64-bit Windows
"C:\Program Files (x86)\Safari\Safari.exe" -url "%1"

Please be aware that modifying or deleting the wrong registry key can effectively break your system, and so it happens at your own risk.

Hope this helps.

Hi
As I previously advised I am not a sophisticated computer user. On my computer regedit shows this path "C:\Program Files(x86)\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe".

On my computer HTTP is shown in lower case as is "iexplore.exe" is this important? Also should "no home" be included in the path?

I can produce a custom easy to use method for U.

Are U using a 32 or 64 Bit system?

If you want, I strongly recommend you ask him to post his guide, as that is probably more userfriendly and fail-safe than mine. Unfortunately, non-technical language is not my specialty.

Hi,

Please know that the following advice is taken only at your own risk. No matter what happens, Secunia is not responsible for any damage to your system. Please be sure (100% sure) you are edititing the correct key as per our FAQ, and that the value is correct.

If you add " -nohome" to the end of the registry key, it should work. And since in windows paths (The C:\Program Files\ stuff) is case-insensitive (small or big letters don't matter), it doesn't change anything if IEXPLORE.EXE is iexplore.exe.

So given only as an example: C:\Program Files(x86)\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe -nohome

Hope this helps.

No problem. I have modified my normal solution to exactly match your requirements.

CHANGING A DEFAULT BROWSER VIA THE REGISTRY

IT IS IMPORTANT U FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTIONS TO THE LETTER. TINKERING IN THE REGISTRY BEYOND THE INSTRUCTIONS GIVEN BELOW AND GETTING IT WRONG CAN,IN CERTAIN CIRCUMSTANCES, CAUSE A SEVERE LOSS OF HUMOUR (like losing the Ashes!) AFTER A RESTART AND WINDOWS REFUSES TO BOOT!

1. Opening REGEDIT

Windows 7 Users - Click Start>type regedit in the search box>REGEDIT.EXE will appear at the top of the list>click it>from the prompt allow the programme to run>U are now in the Registry.

2. Finding the correct key to modify

a. Look in the LEFT PANE & at the top U will see HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT. To the left of that key is an arrow. Click it to reveal a long list of Gobbledygook.
b. Scroll down that list to the entry http Click the arrow to the left and look for SHELL click the arrow to the left of Shell and look for OPEN click the arrow to the left of Open and it will reveal COMMAND

3. Modifying the key.

a. Double click on the word COMMAND. The word COMMAND should be highlighted blue.
b. Now look in the RIGHT HAND PANE and U will see an entry starting with an ICON next to the word (default). DOUBLE click on the word (default).
c. A box will appear. U will see an entry called VALUE DATA which will have data in it highlighted in blue. Click the keyboard DELETE key.Make sure ALL the entry is removed.
d. Now highlight & copy (CTRL+C) & then paste(CTRL+V) the detail in bold immediately below into the DEFAULT box. IT MUST BE EXACTLY AS WRITTEN.

"C:\Program Files (x86)\Internet Explorer\IEXPLORE.EXE" -nohome

Once inserted click OK> the browser U have chosen should now show under DATA in the RIGHT PANE.

Now EXIT the registry by click the RED BOX with a X at the top RIGHT corner.

Checking IE9.

Open IE>from the top line menu select TOOLS>INTERNET OPTIONS>select the PROGRAMS tab>ensure in the DEFAULT WEB BROWSER section that the MAKE DEFAULT button is greyed out & there is a tick (check mark) in the box provided.

Job done. I hope that fixed the error?

Thanks Maurice

The modification solved the problem perfectly; thank you also for your forbearance and diligence. Please convey my appreciation to Emil.

I can't forgive you for winning the Ashes however; enjoy the street party.

Have fun.
