When trying to update Akamai Download Manager through PSI, the update does not update the correct file if the default browser is not Internet Explorer. PSI is trying to update an activex file, but launches the update URL in Firefox, my default browser. PSI should know that it needs to launch IE to download an activex update. The workround for this issue is to copy the update URL and paste it into an IE window manually.

Specifically, I am referring to Secunia Advisory SA40785, but I image this is the case any time PSI tries to update an activex program.

Hi,

When asked to download something, the PSI initiates the program specified in the registry key "HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\HTTP\shell\open\command". So if your download manager does not function correctly when Firefox is the default browser, it's because sending the file to firefox does not initialize the download manager.

Have a look at: http://secunia.com/vulnerability_scanning/personal...

hope this helps.

Hi, that really isn't the problem at all. When Firefox, Chrome, Safari, Opera, or whatever is the default browser, clicking on the Update link in PSI will launch the default browser and send it to the URL http://dlm.tools.akamai.com/tools/upgrade.html. Akamai will then start the download manager for that platform.

In Firefox, Akamai launches a java download manager. This does not update the ActiveX control that PSI has warned me is insecure. Please visit the link http://dlm.tools.akamai.com/tools/upgrade.html and observe for yourself.

The only way to get Akamai to update the ActiveX version of their download manager is to visit http://dlm.tools.akamai.com/tools/upgrade.html from within Internet Explorer, where the link opens up the ActiveX version of the download manager.

Please let me know if I am being unclear. I am trying to help Secunia improve PSI by reporting this unwanted behavior. I believe PSI should launch this kind of link in Internet Explorer be default, regardless of the default browser on my system.
