- Simplified auto-updating with Secunia's free Personal Software Inspector (PSI) 2.0
Copenhagen, Denmark – Secunia, the No.1 provider of vulnerability intelligence, today announced the final release of the Secunia Personal Software Inspector (PSI) 2.0, the new version of its popular free security tool for home users. The Secunia PSI is used by millions of private users and families worldwide and aids them in protecting their personal and financial information against cyber theft.
The Secunia PSI 2.0 represents another initiative by Secunia to give something back to the IT community, by raising awareness of the important issue affecting end-users everywhere – the need for automatic security – and by providing a free user-friendly security tool to help keep home PCs safe.
Without in-depth knowledge, security awareness or the proper tools, many programs on users’ PCs are missing critical security updates. This poses a significant risk to their online security. Patches are an essential safety element that should always be installed.
“Secunia aims to solve this problem with the Secunia PSI 2.0 featuring updates that are truly automatic; truly in the sense that, if the user prefers, the Secunia PSI 2.0 can install most security updates without requiring the user to download, run or otherwise perform manual actions to patch their PC”, states Jakob Balle, VP Product Development at Secunia.
The Secunia PSI 2.0 is a next generation security solution for Windows-based systems, providing unprecedented accuracy. Secunia’s unique and award winning authenticated vulnerability and patch scanning technology automatically detects insecure 3rd-party programs and plug-ins, such as Adobe Flash Player, Adobe Reader, Sun Java, Skype and Firefox, then downloads the required patches from vendors and installs them correctly, thus removing any vulnerabilities. Quick to install and easy to use, the Secunia PSI 2.0 is specially designed for security conscious, non-technical users who want to know that they are protected against vulnerabilities. The Secunia PSI 2.0 frees users from actually having to detect problems, search for security patches themselves and install them manually.
The Secunia PSI 2.0 final release follows a successful Beta test, which revealed highly interesting findings that support the need for auto-updating. Over 90,000 users within the Secunia community tested the solution, providing valuable feedback to further enhance the solution, and 385,272 security patches were automatically installed by the new Auto Update feature. During the Beta test, the Secunia PSI 2.0 automatically installed critical security updates to approximately 37% of Adobe Flash Player users, 47% of Sun Java users and 24% of Adobe Reader users.
Secunia is committed to safeguarding PCs and works closely with the Online Trust Alliance (OTA) to protect and develop the industry, helping millions of private PC users to stay secure.
“The Online Trust Alliance (OTA) applauds the launch of the Secunia PSI 2.0. OTA has been working with Secunia for over two years developing best practices and solutions to aid the business, banking and security communities to help secure their PCs and data and to enhance online trust and the vitality of internet based services. We share the same philosophy, motivation and drive: a world of enhanced online security and a seamless user experience for end-users, free from the threat of cybercrime and online abuse”, comments Craig Spiezle, Executive Director, OTA.
The Secunia PSI 2.0 is also fully integrated with the Secunia Corporate Software Inspector (CSI) through centralised dashboard reporting that provides educational institutions, administrators and organisations with an additional layer of security for users connecting to company networks via PCs/laptops.
